NPR recently did an absolutely fascinating story on two little boys who, from extremely young ages, identified as girls. Their families both sought out therapists. The therapists took radically different approaches- one telling the family to allow their 'son' to become what he wanted- their 'daughter', and one telling the family to take away all their son's feminine toys, stop allowing him to play with his female friends, and basically force him into a male identity.
